The Interesting Life of Sandals

These days it is easy to go out and find yourself a pair of sandals. Though they have spent the last few decades going in and out of fashion as the trends changed, sandals have never gone away. Whether it be the sports styles, the men’s dress leather or more casual womens discount types, they are on the shelves of nearly every shoe store.

While it has often been commented on being the earliest form of footwear, sandals came along after centuries of making do with other things. They appear in history somewhere after an age where people would merely wrap animal skins over their feet. Then throughout history going barefoot was the popular practice if only because even these simple shoes were a luxury.

Despite the millennia of going barefoot people often view ancient figures as wearing sandals as they walked through the dessert. Not a likely case says a lot of historians who would be quick to point out that sandals were costly items and back then one could not simply walk into a discount womens store and pick a pair up. Even some of the great philosophers were likely barefoot a lot of the time even though we imagine them to be in sandals when we try to think back.

Before the days of men’s dress leather sandals were a time when shoes had to evolve from a much lesser form. The athletic sandals were born in a time thousands of years ago when the Greeks held their games the athletes were always barefoot and never wearing sandals. It was not until the Greek empire began to expand and athletes were coming from farther away that sandals started to appear. These athletes were from colder climates where sandals were a necessity. Still, the more local athletes went barefoot and shrugged off those wearing sandals as a strange and weird novelty. Soon enough, however, when those wearing sandals started to win more often then the barefoot competitors people started looking at sandals as a way of cheating. This view didn’t last long as it was soon researched and investigated until it was understood how the sandals were actually benefiting the athletes. At this point all the athletes at the games began wearing sandals and while you still couldn’t go out and buy discount womens or dress men’s sandals, the athletic sandals were born. Innovations to sandals such as better straps and better ways of tacking them together soon followed.

The athletic sandals and the art of making them seemed lost for centuries only to have the sandals come back into use during competitions held in Europe. Then exercise sandals became popular in the 1960s only to be taken over by the growing popularity of the sneaker. But various changes in design made sandals again very popular when used in various extreme sports.

All the while the sandal as casual or dress wear was fashionable in various places and at various times. The men’s dress leather sandals are common place nowadays when more formal attire is called for but the weather just isn’t comfortable enough for anything else. Discount sandals in all kinds of forms, including flip flops, are always popular as a cheap form of footwear. This is especially true for womens discount sandals that, nowadays, are displayed at all kinds of stores during the appropriate months.

With men and womens discount sandals staying so popular in recent decades, it’s interesting to remember how even sandals were once a luxury to the barefoot world.
